Back from the sea!~!~ open water diving course @ Dayang

Yippy!~~!! Feel so happy and carefree!~! Just came back from a 4days 3 nights open water diving course at Dayang (malaysia). I'm a certifide open water diver!~! Now I can dive up to 18m/60ft in the water.

Day 1 (26th May 2005), drizzling
We all meet at NTU at around 6.30pm. After all the "huha" we manage to depart at around 8pm. It was a groomy night, it starts to drizzle when I meet gabra and friend at Jurong Point for a light dinner. I thought that we will be stopping for dinner at malaysia, so I ate only the pan fried dumplings. But, we did not!~~! My dumplings got digested on the way to dayang... it was a 4hours of bus ride to the jetty @ mersing and another 4 hour boat ride to dayang.

This is me and huilin at the jetty before the boat ride to dayang. I think we are high on the bus ride and its already 12am++ and we are still so energetic.

This is me after the 4hour boat ride... dead tired~!~!

This is me and yong tian, our first photo on the island. We finally make it to dayang!~!

It's already 4am++ when we reach dayang. We are suppose to check in to our respective rooms and wake up at 7.30am for breakfast. I was seperated from my friend (gabra, huilin, yongtian and zhihao) as they all stay in the same room- 4 in a room. Being the odd one out, I stayed with 3 other girls who are doing the open water courses also.

This is how our rooms looks like.

I stayed opposite my friends and its quite a "run-down resort". Inside there is 2 double-deck beds, although we have a toilet in the room, there is no basin, no mirror.... just a toliet bowl, a bucket for us to fill the water to flash the toliet... and a shower head that is not working!~!~ But, thank god, we have AIRCON!~! Yes... we singaporean can't live without aircons. But the aircon is shared among two room and how do they do it? The aircon unit is in our room and they used a pipe to channel the air to the room next to us... so if we switch off the aircon in our room.. wahahha!~!~ the next door people will suffocate!~!~ wahahhah!~! The island is really primitive!~!` No television!~!~ No reception!~!~ means we are cut out from the world outside this island!~!~ Ah!~!~ what is more comforting is there is air con!~!~ wahhaha I can't live without air con!~!~ wahahha

Day 2 - 1st open water training.
The boys woke up early at 6.30 to see the sunrise. we girls are too concern of storing enough energy for the whole day diving training. Nevertheless, from the look of the picture... the sky is too cloudy, sun is block by the clouds= no sunrise. Wahaha!~! Lucky we are not so siao on like them, wake up and see sunrise.

Nevertheless, the boys take turns to keep their memories with the dayang sunrise by taking photo!~!~ Wa liew they forget this is my camera leh!~! Lucky is digital camera. Let me introduce them one by one.

Yong Tian, gabra long time best friend since primary school

Gabra, my poly school mate
zhihao, yong tian's friend.

We woke up at 7.30am thinking that the breakfast will be serve as said by the dive com people... when we reach there.. there is nothing!~!~ only tea and coffee!~!~ bohoho. This is us posing with our drinks.. waiting... waiting...

We waited for an hour!~!~ Our 1st breakfast on the island... they serve a variety of breakfast on the island. We have eggs, fried noodles, bread which we can even toast it over the charcoal fire, roti prata, sausages, tomato, cucumber, rose syrup drinks, coffee and tea.

My 1st dive into the water.... dive to 7m and stayed under the water for 63min
This is my first dive of my life... has been to snokling, but diving is a whole load of different skills. I have the most difficulty among the group of students... I could not equalise myself when I descend.... as we go lower.. the pressure gets higher and the ear drums hurts very badly... no matter how much I tried to blow my nose... the ear still can't clear... I guess partially Im getting nervous... everyone has gone down except me!~~ But its dangerous to rush in the water... one can get seriously hurt... I could have been deaf... If I force myself to go down... Slowly the diver master assist me through my equalising... wriggling my teeth, blow harder, etc... before i know it I have already descended to the bottom and join my friends. When we have descend, we held on to a rope and watch our dive instructor demonstrate the different skills and each of us take turn to show her:
Opps forget to talk about my instructor, cheryl. A very fierce looking, and long winded person... we are last group to get on to the boat and set off... coz she practically goes through once again all the skills we have to do later in the water... nevertheless, she is the best instructor as she is very detailed in our training. She instructs us about boat keeping, and how we should always get ready to gear up quickly so that we can go down the water as soon as we reach the dive spot, etc.

In our group we have two "air sucker", my buddy, huilin (its another huilin not our huilin. Our huilin is a open water diver and she joined the leisure dive group) and my friend gabra. I have to constantly monitor her air pressue inside her tank... once it hit 50bar, we all have to ascend.

Poor gabra... he has seasick... the min he reach shore he will vomit....

Dive 2 of the day... dive to 12m and stayed in water for 50min
I managed to descend with ease this time round... equalising is not a problem. We manage to see a green turtle eating a jelly fish. Most of us was trying our best to keep one eye on what the turtle is doing and one eye on cheryl. Ke ke...

It was time for my most fear skill... sharing the alternative air source from my buddy... I could not do it coz I cant seems to bite on tight enough at the regulator due to my braces... so every time I tried to do it... the regulator will fall off... if I have to hold on to my regulator.. I cant do the roman hands lock with my buddy to ascend and I cant inflate my BCD.... in the end... I tried my best...and manage abit....

We did a few more skills and its time for us to ascend up becoz of the air suckers!~!

My buddy has to ascend before me coz she is low on air.. and got on to the boat. It was than our fierce cheryl screamed at them and ask them to get down immediately as she wanted us to demonstrate how to remove our BCD and on surface and wear it back.... she even scolded our dive master... so fierce sia!~!

I vomited after I ascend to the surface.... think I got sea sick like gabra... should not have laugh at people... wahahaha... my lunch... punkin.... I vomitted punkin!~!~~ eeeeeeekk!~

Dive 3 of the day... dive to 12m and stayed underwater 50min.
I really pity the corals... gabra cut a coral with his fin when he was trying to stand on the floor.... it was so dangerous to do our training among the corals... I'm constantly trying my best to stay away from them... but the current keep pushing up back and fro... Saw the 1st blue sea star... its a blue starfish that I saw when im at palawan... over at palawan there is alot of such starfish... over here I only manage to see one after the 3rd dive. But there is alot of sea cucumber.. some long and black... some like mutant, have spikes, ugly horns, etc.

Gabra... vomit again... wahhaha... he has become the joker of the whole dive trip.... wahhaha. We suggest that we cage him in the water and when he vomit he can attract fishes to come and let us see. wahhaha.

I sleep super soundly after a day of excitment underwater.

Day 3- 2nd day of the open water training.

4th dive... dive to 17.3m and stayed underwater for 34min.
We are been force to wake up early at 6am to go for our last training... to descend without the assist of the rope!~~ I could not descend properly... before I even start descending I'm already panting on the surface.. I guess I'm abit nervous- I'm always the last person to go down... I saw every one descend down at the bottom of the sea and I tried my best to exhale and inhale quickly.. I manage to descend abit down.. and starts to get panic and I surface again... I could not find my dive master who is suppose to assist me and peiyu (another weak diver like me)... after a few struggle.. cheryl swim towards me and help me slowly descend. We went around and have our first look around the sea... everyone is bumping into each other.. and most of the time I'm lagging behind without my buddy.... lucky my friends are good enought to always keep a look out for me. As I never buy any underwater camera.. the photos are coutesy of zhihao

A dive instructor tourturing a puffer fish to let the divers take photos
I saw a moray eel

I saw alot of sea cucumber again... some cushion like starfish... a puffer fish...alot of corals - live and hard... green turtle again... a school of fish... hai... how i know what fish I saw... should get a chart and read up some books or else all are just fishes to me.

Blue sea star
Christmas tree worm

Cushion-like starfish.. no idea what is it real name

Of coz.. not forgeting nemo aka crown fishes

There is one time.. cheryl make a sudden 360 turn and everyone following behind got panic.. thought there is some danger... I can pratically see everyone making a quick turn also... so do I... I rather run.. make there is a trigger fish chasing after us... ah!~~~!

Trigger fish... an ugly fish with a big head... will attack people during the nesting season.

green turtle

Not only I was unable to descend to the water... I was also unable to do a 3m safety stop before ascending. 3m safety stop is very important esp. we stay in the water too long... it is suppose to get rid of the nitrogen in our body to prevent us from getting decompression sickness.

5th dive and my last dive of the day... dive to 17m and stayed underwater for 39min.
I manage to slowly descend into the water and did the 3m safety stop. Again, we see alot of fishes... some how i felt the marine life in dayang is not very interesting... compared to what i saw in palawan... almost the same also... corals looks destroy... fishes are so small. A advance diver which join our group to help us take photo was attacked by the trigger fish.. He was helping some girls to take some picture and when he turn around the trigger fish was behind.. before he can react.. the fish bited him on his forehead and a small piece of silicom from mask. Poor him... i think he felt regretted for joining our group.
